What's CITY Talking About?

Portland Climate Activist Arrested

Adah Crandall, a youth climate leader from Portland, was arrested outside Vice President Kamala Harris’ house in Los Angeles. Crandall, who graduated last year from Grant High School, is working for the Sunrise Movement, which is demanding that President Biden declare a climate emergency. She and five of her fellow activists face a misdemeanor charge for failing to disperse. [Willamette Week]

‘Put a Bird on It’ Apology

Could this be the moment Portland takes a step toward healing after the TV show “Portlandia”? The show’s co-creator, Carrie Brownstein, has now offered something of an apology for creating the unofficial Portland motto “put a bird on it.” Brownstein told the Portland Mercury she didn’t think it would be so catchy: “I apologize. I had no idea.” But she does seem to believe the city needs a slogan: “We have many options. ‘The city that works,’ I feel like most of us might say that’s not a working slogan anymore, so it’s definitely up for debate, I think.” [Portland Mercury]

Oregon Wolf Population Stays Flat

Oregon’s wolf population has plateaued for the first time since wolves returned to Oregon in the early 2000s. There were 178 wolves counted in 2023, the same as the previous year. That’s partly explained by 33 wolf deaths caused by humans, a dozen of which are being investigated as cases of illegal poaching. [OPB]

Where Is It?

The tree with a face, on the southeast corner of Southeast Cesar Chavez at Sherman Street, wears the mask of the spirit character No-Face from the 2001 Japanese film “Spirited Away.” It won the Oscar that year for animated feature, and apparently the heart of at least one Portland superfan. In the movies, No-Face is a lonely ghostlike spirit who shifts personality, depending on whom he has last consumed.

A shoutout to readers who identified the spot: Joseph Erikson, Alexandria Moore, Tara Pohlman, Sarah Vivoda, Devon Essick, Emily Meneer, and Theresa Beck van Heemstra.

Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon, is 100% worthy of attention. But this one is bigger if you’re measuring by volume of water.

Inside a Portland Micro-Village

The nonprofit WeShine, which a group of neighbors created together, builds and runs micro-villages in our city. Executive Director Jan McManus and facility coordinator Hunter Burkett are sharing how their micro-villages address the ongoing housing crisis and how their model fits in with all the city and county’s efforts to address homelessness.

My ideas for a new Portland slogan still need some work: The city that sleeps. The city that hikes. The city that reads. The city that eats sourdough pizza.

What’s your best stab at a replacement for Portlandia’s “put a bird on it”? Please email me if you’re struck by inspiration.
