💰 New proof Portland didn’t ruin women’s NCAA basketball

April 8, 2024

Good morning, Portland! Did you go chasing the total solar eclipse somewhere between Texas to New England? 🌑 If not, there’s still a partial eclipse to watch here if the weather predictions hold ☀️ Peak viewing time here is 11:25 a.m. 🌜

What's CITY Talking About?

Daytime Camping OK for Unsheltered Portlanders?

Even as the U.S. Supreme Court is poised to weigh in on homelessness camping bans, Mayor Ted Wheeler is moving ahead with revising city ordinances. Last year, a local judge put on hold Portland’s sweeping ban that barred daytime camping on city properties. Under Wheeler’s new proposal, when there is no shelter space, daytime camping will be allowed. But there will be the threat of arrest if someone does not move into a shelter when space is offered. The penalty will be up to 7 days in jail (instead of 30 days under the old ordinance) or a $100 fine. [Oregonian]

Women’s NCAA Final Four Are Sold at a Premium

Portland hosted parts of the women’s NCAA Sweet-16 and Elite 8 — an event marred by a misplaced three-point line. But that doesn’t appear to have dampened fans’ excitement. The NCAA Women's Final Four tickets were reselling for more than double the amount of the men's event. The average for the women’s games was $2,323. For men, it was just above $1,000. That’s partly, officials say, because the men had a larger venue and there are more tickets. [KATU]

Why Your Local Portland Library Might Look — and Feel — a Lot Different

The Multnomah County Library is one of the busiest libraries in the country, based on circulation. With a $387 million dollar construction boom underway, as well as ongoing concerns about safety, there’s a lot more going on than just quiet reading these days. The library’s director Vailey Oehlke talks about the massive changes coming to libraries across the region.
