🥒🏓 The latest Portland pickleball war
April 1, 2024
Good morning! I’ll admit I’m a bit amused at the latest battle over pickleball in a tony neighborhood — this time Irvington.
But living in a city or even in the suburbs can be full of other people’s annoying noises. Are there any bugging you right now? Please email me, if you’re willing to share.

What's CITY Talking About?
High Number of East County Overdoses
Unfortunately, downtown isn’t the only neighborhood where fentanyl and other drugs are taking a toll. The second-highest number of opioid overdoses were in the Rockwood and Centennial neighborhoods in Gresham and East Portland, according to Multnomah County’s recently released data from 2023. The county tracked people by their home zip code when they sought help at an urgent care facility or hospital. In the zip code covering the Pearl and Old Town, there were 244 people who had an overdose. In the Centennial and Rockwood zip code, it was 150. [Oregonian]

Pickleball Pause for Irvington Club
A neighbor is threatening to sue the Irvington Club over the noise from its outdoor pickleball courts, which are next to her home. In response, the club has halted outdoor play for the time being. The neighbor had previously complained to the city, but current noise code exempts athletic events, including pickleball. The city is considering updating its codes. [Willamette Week]
Dog-Friendly Vacation Destination
Portland was fifth among the most dog-friendly U.S. vacation destinations. Flagstaff, Ariz.; San Luis Obispo, Calif.; Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Austin ranked higher based on the restaurants, bars, hotels, and vets per capita, along with beaches and trails that allow dogs. USA Today looked at the 50 cities that foreign travelers visit most often in the U.S. Apparently, we have 18 dog-friendly restaurants per 100,000 residents. [KOIN]
