🤑No tolls for these highways after all
March 13, 2024
Good morning, Portland! It’s City Cast Director of Production Natalie Rivera dropping in to give you a breakdown of today’s news, which includes a story about a record store owner who helped catch the very burglar terrorizing his business. If you think this sounds like the makings of a movie, you’re not alone!

What's CITY Talking About?
🚨North Portland Record Store Owner Helps Catch Burglar
After two break-ins in a week, Vinyl Resting Place owner Steve Cook took manners into his own hands when he and another business owner followed the burglar after spotting him outside his store. They flagged police during the pursuit, leading to the suspect’s swift arrest. [KGW]

🤑Gov. Tina Kotek Scraps Plans for Freeway Tolls
Plans to toll interstates 5 and 205 have been shelved by Gov. Tina Kotek, according to a letter sent to the Oregon Transportation Commission. In it, Kotek says that it is time to retire the Regional Mobility Pricing Project—the city’s plan to roll out the tolls—citing funding as one of the reasons for withdrawing her support. [Oregonian]
🪧Radio Recordings Show Police Arrested Demonstrators Without Probable Cause
Police radio recordings from a 2019 demonstration confronting the Proud Boys might show evidence of police arresting mostly leftist protestors without suspecting a crime. The conversations recorded by a Portland Police Bureau airplane that circled overhead that day have been filed as new evidence by the attorney of a demonstrator who was arrested and is now suing the city. Today on City Cast
I keep in the forefront of my mind this ideology that your best friend was a stranger once.
How To Make Friends in Portland
It’s a question as old as time: How the heck do you make new friends?! Thankfully we got some answers from friend-to-hire (yes, that’s a thing) and Throw Snakes Tour founder and guide, Dresden De Vera. What if you don’t like drinking, or even hiking? How do you spark meaningful conversations with strangers? De Vera has tips on how to meet people in a city where being introverted can be a badge of honor.

That’s it from me! Now go make weekend plans with your best friend (it’s going to be a sunny one!) ☀️
