🎓 Beaverton students getting instant college admission

March 11, 2024

Happy National 311 Day, Portland! While 9-1-1 is there for emergencies, 3-1-1 is designed as a resource for non-emergency city issues and questions, as well as the centralized intake point for mobility requests related to the Americans with Disabilities Act. So, cheers to PDX 311, which launched publicly in 2022.

What's CITY Talking About?

🧀 Oregon’s Award-Winning Cheddar

Tillamook’s sharp cheddar cheeses took home four of the top five prizes in the cheddar category at this year’s World Championship Cheese Contest, including the top spot, scoring 99.85 out of 100. The cheesy competition is hosted by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association every two years. [Oregonian 🔒]

🎓 Instant College Admission

Portland Community College announced an initiative offering direct admission to Beaverton High School graduates beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, meaning students will automatically be admitted to the college without needing to apply. PCC plans to expand the program district-wide in the coming years. [KGW]

🍺 Self-Service Alcohol Brews Controversy

The Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission is investigating compliance issues at the Moda Center due to self-service alcohol sales and complaints about compliance with state liquor laws. The restaurant is using Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” technology for convenience, but employees say management is not providing enough support in enforcing ID checks and opening containers, leading to some friction with customers. Did This Filmmaker Find D.B. Cooper?

Last month, it was reported that the FBI may have quietly re-opened one of the greatest unsolved PNW mysteries of all time: the case of D.B. Cooper, the infamous hijacker who parachuted out of a plane and disappeared somewhere over SW Washington in 1971 with $200,000 worth of ransom money. Today we’re listening back to our conversation with filmmaker T.J. Regan about his documentary, “I am D.B. Cooper,” where he joins a man claiming to be D.B. Cooper on a treasure hunt for the remaining ransom money.

That’s all for me today. Rachel Monahan will be back in your inbox tomorrow morning.
