The End of Oregon’s Drug Decriminalization

Top Democrats have agreed to a plan to end Oregon’s decriminalization of drugs: Possession of small amounts of fentanyl, meth and heroin will carry a punishment of up to six months in jail, and police officers will not be required to offer drug treatment deflection programs in lieu of jail time. Nike Competitor’s New Shoe Store

In a tale of two athletic shoe brands, Nike has begun its first layoffs since 2020, while on Saturday the Swiss company On is opening its first local retail shop in Northwest Portland. On’s sales have grown 47% in the last quarter, and it now employs roughly 260 people in Portland. [Oregonian]

UPS To Lay Off More Than 300 Workers

UPS is planning to lay off 331 part-time and full-time employees from its North Portland sorting facility. There’s not enough work, and so the layoffs are expected to be permanent, the company said. [Portland Business Journal Via KGW]

Movement for a New Albina
