What's CITY Talking About?
Teachers and Parents Filling Addiction-Prevention Gaps
Elementary school kids in Forest Grove are learning a self-regulation strategy that has proven effective at preventing drug addiction later in life, thanks to a teacher who brought the program to the area. A mom at West Linn’s high school has started a club teaching kids the realities of drug addiction. And a Beaverton family helped launch that district’s model fentanyl education program. Parents and teachers are filling gaps in schools’ education around drugs and addiction. [The Lund Report via OPB]
Changing of Oregon’s Cherished Bottle Bill
Oregon’s landmark Bottle Bill got rid of litter by offering cash for turning in cans and bottles. But canning has become a quick way for people with addictions to score cash and buy fentanyl. The drug is so cheap that just 50 cans is all it takes for a day’s supply. That’s a problem that the Restaurant and Lodging Association wants to address by no longer offering cash for cans and bottles, but instead giving out food credits — something in the vein of food stamps. ‘Whistling’ Heard on Previous Alaska Flight
Alaska Airlines passengers seated near the door plug could hear a whistling noise and reported it to the crew on the prior flight of the plane that lost the plug over Portland. That’s the latest allegation from a lawyer for passengers suing the airline and Boeing over physical and emotional harm. [Oregonian 🔒]
Portland Street Response Cuts?
City Commissioners Rene Gonzalez and Carmen Rubio, who are both running for mayor this year, are tussling over a proposed budget cut to The Portland Street Response and a potential relief package from the Portland Clean Energy Fund. That’s part of this week’s Friday news round-up. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Saving Portland Street Response, Fighting Over Parks, and Clapping Back on the Fentanyl Plan
This week’s news includes a new public park that’s causing some heated debates, Commissioner Carmen Rubio’s bottomless bag of money potentially saving the Portland Street Response, and some skeptical county commissioners criticizing the governor’s 90-day emergency fentanyl declaration. Portland Mercury news reporter Taylor Griggs joins City Cast Portland host Claudia Meza and executive producer John Notarianni.

Oregon’s favorite Super Bowl snack food (as judged by Google Trends) is Buffalo chicken dip, which seven other states favor, as well. (For the uninitiated, that’s another snack — Buffalo wings — turned into a dip.)
Enjoy the game and your weekend!
