Portland chain accused of misspending $800K in tips
January 31, 2024
Hello! It seems early to call this spring, even a false spring. But I’ve been enjoying the warm weather. How about you?

What's CITY Talking About?
Nike Sex Discrimination and a First Amendment Case
A federal judge has ordered The Oregonian to destroy documents related to a Nike sex discrimination lawsuit — and not publish stories based on them. A lawyer who represents women suing Nike initially sent the documents to the newspaper and, after The Oregonian declined to return them, sought the court order. The paper will appeal the order, citing First Amendment protections against the government preventing publication. [Oregonian]
Portland Challenge to Republican Congress
A Portland-area congressional district is getting national attention as the Democratic Party works to regain control of the U.S. House in November. This week, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee endorsed State Rep. Janelle Bynum, giving her resources even in May’s primary. [Oregon Capital Chronicle]
- Bynum faces fellow Democrats Lynn Peterson, who is Metro’s council president, and Jamie McLeod-Skinner, 2022’s Democratic candidate for the 5th Congressional District. U.S. Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a Republican, won her first term two years ago. [Oregon Capital Chronicle]
Feds: McMenamins Labor Violation
The U.S. Department of Labor says McMenamins violated the law in sharing $800,000 in tips with assistant managers at its Edgefield and Cedar Hills locations. The feds don’t plan to go to court to reclaim the money, though workers can sue. McMenamins says their tip-sharing policy is legal. [Willamette Week]
Is There Progress?
Andy Mendenhall, CEO of the nonprofit Central City Concern, explains how he thinks our city could address homelessness, mental health challenges, and drug addiction issues — and what progress has been made. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Where Is It?

The troll named Ole Bolle is the work of Danish environmental artist Thomas Dambo, who has built more than a hundred of these creatures around the world. There are five more sculptures, in Washington, that are part of “Northwest Trolls: Way of the Bird King,” if you want to add them to a trip to Seattle. In the meantime, I recommend a visit to Olle Bole one at Nordic Northwest in the Washington County suburbs. (Bonus: eat at Broder Soder afterward.)
Shout out to the first 10 readers who got it right: Marilyn, Kellie Russ, Erin, Kim, Judy Helmke, Roxanne Thomas, Steve Lippincott, Anita Carroll, Madhavi N., and Alex Dolan.

This is a Portland classic. Where is it? Have you been there since the building reopened?

Progress on Portland’s Most Vexing Problems?
Andy Mendenhall, CEO of the social services nonprofit Central City Concern, explains how he thinks our city could address homelessness, mental health challenges, and drug addiction issues.
The primary driver for the challenges that we see in our community is first and foremost, we don’t have enough housing resources.
Are you in need of some advice for, say, making it through the rest of winter because (gross!) your socks keep getting wet? Or help! my neighbor thinks they own the parking space in front of their house — how do I deal?
The City Cast Portland podcast will be getting answers from an advice columnist. Please email us any questions you’d like answers to. (We don’t need to share your name if you want to stay anonymous.)
