What's CITY Talking About?

The Next I-5 Bridge Project Fight

Critics are gearing up for a renewed fight over the project to replace the I-5 bridge between Washington and Oregon as a new stage of environmental review begins this spring. In just four years, the estimated cost of the bridge has almost doubled to a likely $6 billion, with an even higher price tag expected this summer once new financial projections are completed. Even as it’s unclear how Washington and Oregon will pay for the project, there’s more political support for it than during the first attempt to replace the bridge two decades ago. [Portland Mercury]

A Portland Teenage Hero

A teenager in Northeast Portland successfully saved a baby from being electrocuted last week, even as emergency rescuers told the girl to stay clear. The baby’s father, mother, and uncle died after falling on ice and slipping into the downed power line; the father was holding the baby. They are among 10 Oregonians killed this month because of winter storms. [AP via OPB]

Warming Shelters Closed While Roads Still Icy

Multnomah County is facing criticism for closing its warming shelters for unhoused Portlaners on Thursday when temperatures rose. Officials made that call even as county offices stayed closed because of icy conditions. “County leadership is not being internally consistent when you’re saying our staff can’t come to work because it’s too cold, but it’s not cold enough for us to bring people inside who are living on the streets,” said County Commissioner Dr. Sharon Meieran. Portland Karaoke Do’s and Don’ts

There are at least 15 Portland bars dedicated to karaoke — and dozens more that host very popular karaoke nights. Yoni Wilson, a karaoke jockey (or KJ) at karaoke mecca The Alibi, offers his tips for putting on your best show and explains a few unspoken rules for a fun night with friends.

Karaoke lets you release something that maybe you need to release emotionally.

Before I go, one correction on the arson news item from Friday’s newsletter: the car that was torched belonged to Rene Gonzalez’s parents and was parked outside his house. Apologies for incorrectly identifying who owns the vehicle.

I’ll see you tomorrow!
