🦀 How to make the most of Oregon shellfish season
January 17, 2024
Hello, normal rainy gloom 🌧️ It’s supposed to hit 40 degrees and stay above freezing tonight 🌂 It feels crazy to say, but … Woohoo! 🙂

What's CITY Talking About?
The Fallout From the Winter Storms
It’s the City Cast Portland podcast’s midweek news round-up, in time to discuss the fallout from the ice and snow. Executive producer John Notarianni and host Claudia Meza also chat about a fire bureau scandal and open listener mail. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Portland Public Schools Closed
For the second day in a row, school is out: Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, and North Clackamas, among others, cancelled classes for today because of the weather. That creates a logistical hurdle for Portland Public Schools to make up snow days, given the nearly month-long strike. Portland Community College is also closed today. [Oregonian]
Preview of New Downtown Park
The Portland Parks and Recreation Bureau previewed plans for the Darcelle Fifteen Plaza, a new downtown park named for the city’s famous late drag queen (whose given name was Walter Cole). It will have a stage, “wall of fame” for local LGBTQ leaders, and a space for art. [OPB]

Where Is It?

Last week’s scavenger hunt was for a bit of history that’s still part of the cityscape: It’s a former training tower for Portland’s fire bureau. Located at Southeast Milwaukie Avenue and Powell Boulevard, it helped train firefighters from 1962 to 1985. The property formerly hosted a fire station and currently hosts logistics operations for the bureau (in another building).
Thanks to all of you who successfully identified the location, though many of us (including me before I did the research) thought the site was still an active training location. The first ten included Scott, William Martell, Alexia, Erica Blair, Margaret H, Clare Goggin Sivits, Andrew M., Bill, Derek Badstreet, and Brian Catterson.
Here’s a challenge of a different sort. It’s a current business:

You’ve probably driven past this neon sign a hundred times, like I have. But can you place it?
The suggestion for this week’s scavenger hunt comes from City Cast Portland executive producer John Notarianni.

The Winter Storm’s Fallout and the Scandal at the Fire Bureau
It’s the City Cast Portland podcast’s midweek news round-up: There’s fallout from the winter storms that battered us this week and a scandal that embroiled the Portland Fire Bureau. Executive producer John Notarianni and host Claudia Meza discuss the news and also open listener mail.
Somebody was taken to the hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning because they were trying to run a gas generator inside of their house. Guys: Don't do that.
When we dig out from under these storms, there will be some good snowshoeing and skiing. Maybe the storm isn’t all bad news, including for fire season.
