❄️ What you need to know for a snow day

January 12, 2024

Hello, Friday! There’s plenty of new restaurants to chow down at, music to dance to, and movies to watch (more below) 🍴🎵🎥 But maybe we’ll all be stuck at home ❄️☃️

What's CITY Talking About?

Will There Be Snow?

Blasts of arctic air are arriving today, and there’ll be freezing temperatures throughout the weekend. Maybe there’ll be snow by the time you read this or by end of today. [National Weather Service Portland]

  • Delays in garbage pickup. Even if there’s no snow where you are, there could be icy conditions elsewhere that impact service. [KOIN]
  • Check road conditions. Stay home (particularly) on Friday evening if you can. But you can find updates on conditions before you go. [ODOT]
  • Track Portland’s snow plows. There’s a map for that. [PBOT]
  • Take public transit. TriMet is equipped to run buses and trains in ice and snow. But the weather does make operations more unpredictable. They’ll provide updates. [TriMet]

Development Options for Homeowners

To address the housing crisis, Portland and Oregon have changed zoning rules to try to bolster housing development. Now a new real-estate development firm is trying to cater to homeowners who want to build more apartments on the lots they own. Shortstack cofounder Anna Mackay says they’re looking for building projects of two to 20 units — called “missing middle housing” — that she hopes will be reasonably priced and help both homeowners and the city’s housing crisis. For the City Cast Portland podcast Friday round-up of news: There’s a new report on the lack of reliable data tracking where homelessness tax dollars are going. Also: are Boeing planes safe? And what happened on the Marquam Bridge? [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Is Boeing Still Safe? Plus, Passive Policing and Tracking Homelessness

For the Friday round-up of news: Police walked away from a person in crisis on the Marquam Bridge. There’s a lack of reliable data tracking where our money for the homelessness tax is going. And is it still safe to fly Boeing? Oregonian reporter Nicole Hayden talks to City Cast Portland podcast host Claudia Meza and executive producer John Notarianni.

If it's a Boeing, I'm not going.

I hope you have a fun weekend ☃️ Stay safe out there ❄️
