☃️ Winter is coming
January 11, 2024
Good morning, Portland! Have any of your pandemic hobbies survived the return to normalcy? So many people took up bread making, exercising, or drinking heavily. One man’s project got me thinking ⬇️

What's CITY Talking About?
Portland Man Walked Every Street
A Portland runner turned to walking after an injury and hit every block of Portland streets over the course of three years. Yes, it began as a pandemic project, but the walks continued. Perrin Smith, 43, who works as a pizza chef, has lived in Portland since 2006. His favorite area of Portland to walk in? The Southwest hills (particularly the Hillsdale, Maplewood, and Markham neighborhoods). [Bike Portland]
Other Boeing MAX Planes Had Problems
Alaska Airlines has found loose hardware on other Boeing MAX planes, like the one that lost a door plug over Portland. That means the problem that led to an emergency return to PDX late last week isn’t an isolated problem. The development comes as passengers continue to tell a harrowing tale of the emergency return to PDX. [KUOW via OPB]
- Related: A Portland architect was on the flight and said goodbye to his loved ones via text. That was before he survived to wait three hours in line back at the airport. He rebooked for a flight later that night. [Oregonian]
- Related: Alaska Airlines is offering passengers $1,500 for “the inconvenience” of the experience. They can retain a lawyer, though it’s not clear what a jury will award in damages for the frightening experience. [Washington Post]
Oregon Cannabis Defies Inflation
Oregon voted a decade ago to make recreational cannabis legal, but now large harvests have oversupplied the market, causing a drop in prices. And it’s not yet legal to export the crop. Willamette Week’s “Potlander” column author Brianna Wheeler explains all the reasons why Portland consumers aren’t subject to inflation when it comes to getting high. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Portland Chatter

Thanks to all the readers who shared their perspectives on recent newsletters. Here’s a couple of notable responses:
Snow Days
I wrote about dreading the arrival of snow and asked for different perspective on snow days:
“They are the best. We bundle up and go walking (usually to the closest watering hole). It is peaceful. It is bright at night. If the watering hole is open, settle in for a toddy and enjoy the company of your fellow snow explorers!” — Reagan
Where to Catch Mt. Hood
I wrote about loving the city views of Mt. Hood. Suggestions came in from readers about where to take in the sight:
“From the Japanese garden.” — Margaret
“On the northeast side of Mt. Tabor there are some picnic tables just a bit uphill from the tennis courts and horseshoe rings. On any given weekend, you might find a small wedding, a family reunion or once, I met the Daughters of Norway club. The view of Mt Hood is stunning from there, and it’s a wonderful spot to watch the moon rise (and the sun rise too I’m sure, I’m just never awake then). — Michelle

Why Oregon Cannabis Is So Cheap
Oregon voted a decade ago to make recreational cannabis legal, but now the industry is in trouble. Large harvests have oversupplied the market, causing a drop in prices; at the same time, there are still illegal cannabis farms. Willamette Week’s “Potlander” column author Brianna Wheeler explains how all these factors are affecting Oregon’s industry.
Imagine if Oregon could export our weed like we export our craft beer. It would be game-changing for our economy.
The green sea turtle who washed up on the beach at Manzanita has died. Conscientious work by staff at two aquariums did not save her. R.I.P. 🐢
