What to know about the mysterious dog illness

December 18, 2023

Good morning, Portland! We’re getting into the stretch of the year when things quiet down. I’ll be off next week. But it seems like plenty of students and teachers may be starting their vacation now. See below.

What's CITY Talking About?

Mass Absences Expected

About 30% of the Portland Association of Teachers’ 3,600 members requested at least one sick or personal day for this week, which was previously scheduled as winter break but is now makeup days for the strike. (Student absences are expected too.) And the district is offering to pay substitutes time and a half. If the situation gets extreme, the district could call off days at particular school buildings. Nike Founder Is Totally Loaded

Reminder: Nike founder Phil Knight is Oregon’s wealthiest person. Ranked No. 18 on Forbes’ list of this year’s biggest billionaires, Knight has an estimated net worth of $39.5 billion. [KOIN]

$20K Mystery Gift

A donor mysteriously left a valuable pair of gold-colored Air Jordan 3’s in the clothing donation chute at the nonprofit Portland Rescue Mission. The auction house Southeby’s is selling them off today to raise money for the nonprofit; they’re expected to sell for between $15,000 and $20,000. [Oregonian]

Warming Up With Portland’s Best Dumplings

We’re just three days away from the official start of winter, and it’s getting chilly out there. So today we’re revisiting a conversation with Eater Portland editor Brooke Jackson-Glidden about the best dumplings to try across the city — everything from soup dumplings to Georgian khinkali.

A perfect xiao long bao is so hard to do and if people do it right, it’s mind-blowing.
Brooke Jackson-Glidden, Eater Portland

On my list to try: The violet-colored dumplings at Siam Umami that Jackson-Glidden mentions in passing. Maybe I’ll get to them this holiday season.
