Protecting your home against ‘atmospheric rivers’ 🌧️

December 6, 2023

Hey Portland! It’s City Cast Portland executive producer John Notarianni, filling in for another day. We’ve all heard plenty about atmospheric rivers, but now it’s time for a “Pineapple Express.” (Are we allowed to say that? It feels wrong.)

What's CITY Talking About?

Sandbags! Get Your Sandbags!

With this recent deluge of rainy weather, there are flood watches in effect through today. Portland has set sandbag-filling locations across the city. If you’re in a flood-prone area, you can grab sandbags at Lents Park, Gabriel Park, or SE 111th Ave and Harold St. The bags are free, but BYO shovel. Fun! [KPTV]

Plows and Salt Trucks’ Budget Gets a Boost

Gov. Tina Kotek and legislative leaders announced they’re pumping an extra $19 million into ODOT to keep roads clear this winter. The money will be used to buy 10 new snowplow trucks, deicer and salt, and cover overtime costs for workers, among other things. ODOT is still facing a massive budget shortfall. [Oregonian]

Subsidizing Middle-Income Homes?

Kotek's Housing Production Advisory Council is considering a proposal to spend $300 million to help finance 10,000 units of middle-income or workforce housing. That’s defined as housing for residents making between 60% and 120% of an area's median income. It’s one of several housing ideas the Oregon Legislature could take up during next February’s short session. [Portland Business Journal 🔒]

Remembering Old Portland with a Punk Rock Icon

In honor of our show’s one-year anniversary—which is today!—we’re going back to the very beginning with our very first guest: Toody Cole of the legendary Portland rock band Dead Moon. She talks with host Claudia Meza about the golden days of DIY Portland and how she’s watched the city change throughout the years.

A lot of it's our lifestyle, our love story, our music stores, the whole ball of wax; we’ve just become synonymous with this town.

It’s that time of year when it feels like there’s a new murder in Portland every day. Put some peanuts out for your new neighbors?
