Strike’s over!
November 27, 2023
Welcome back from a holiday weekend! Here’s some news and events to get you back in the swing of things.

What's CITY Talking About?
Portland Public Schools Open
After a 26-day teachers strike, Portland Public Schools’ students return to class today. The district and Portland Association of Teachers reached a tentative deal late Sunday afternoon. There’s a two-hour delay on school start times today, and the deal has yet to be approved by the district and teachers. [KOIN]
- Related: To make up for the 11 school days cancelled by the strike, the first week of the winter break, Presidents Day, the first three days of summer vacation, and two teacher in-service days will all now be school days. [Oregonian 🔒]
- Related: Teachers won a 13% increase in cost-of-living raises over the three years of the contract. The new contract also gives elementary and middle school teachers 6 hours and 50 minutes of planning time a week, an increase of 90 minutes. PPS says all these changes will cost $175 million three years, and will require budget cuts next year to pay for them. [KGW]
Portland Mushroom Treatment Options
Two leading advocates for psilocybin treatment in Oregon are slated to open their own treatment center next year in Portland’s Central Eastside. The company InnerTrek Services will conduct group treatment at the relatively affordable rate of $800 a session. [Oregonian]

Commercial Crabbing Season Delayed
The Dungeness crab fishing season won’t start in Oregon, Washington, or California until at least Dec. 16 — a 15-day delay. That’s because the crabs aren’t yet producing enough meat to be harvested, according to recent testing. Dungeness crabs are the most lucrative catch for the Oregon fishing industry. [OPB]

All of a sudden your life feels very charming like a Nora Ephron rom-com, as opposed to just being in the sad gray times.
One note: I failed to offer credit where it was due for a story mentioned in Wednesday’s news segment: Oregon Capital Chronicle's Julia Shumway landed that scoop on Sen. Merkley’s call for a ceasefire. I’ll see you tomorrow!
