What's CITY Talking About?

Progress and Confusion on Settling Strike

Two big issues that led Portland teachers to strike appear to be resolved: planning time and cost of living increases. But class size remained a sticking point as the Portland Association of Teachers and Portland Public Schools traded accusations about who was holding up a deal yesterday. [Oregonian]

Crowds at the Airport

Arrive early to Portland International Airport if you’re flying out for the holidays. That’s the advice of airport officials, particularly since there’s been a 13% increase over last year in travelers at PDX. It’s expected to be the busiest Thanksgiving holiday in years. Watch for the most crowds on Sunday. [Oregonian 🔒]

'Portland’s Most Unusual Man'

More than 200 Portlanders gathered last week to remember “the most unusual man in the city”: Barry Sutton, 73, a houseless man who spent 50 years on the city’s streets. A foster kid in his youth, he suffered from debilitating seizures and mental illness. He was also friends with MIT professor Noam Chomsky and later a national leader on homelessness issues. Portland’s Best Fast Food with Legendary ‘Simpsons’ writer Bill Oakley

Bill Oakley is Portland’s resident fast food expert. You may already know him as a writer for “The Simpsons.” He’s sharing his reviews of Portland’s vegan junk food and the best burgers.

I’m trying to think of something that Homer would want to devour, which would probably be enormous. The giant burrito at Tight Tacos would probably take the cake.
Bill Oakley, fast food expert

I met Barry a few times. He once told me he was thinking of the suffering of others — in Ukraine, for one, if memory serves — and that it put his own life on our streets in perspective. RIP.
