Psychedelic vegetables and ugly sweaters
November 16, 2023
Hello, Portland! I apologize for ever uttering the phrase “No School November”; it was a wild exaggeration, in years past, for a month with holidays and in-service teacher days. Can the kids go back to school yet?

What's CITY Talking About?
Fentanyl’s Brutal Effects
As the CEO of Portland’s largest social services nonprofit, Central City Concern’s Andy Mendenhall has notable insights into fentanyl addiction and its impacts. In a Willamette Week interview, he attacked Multnomah County’s policy of pursuing “housing first,” without first supporting treatment. And he argues more residential treatment facilities are necessary. [Willamette Week]
Nike Sex Discrimination Charge
A new filing in the 2018 sex discrimination lawsuit against Nike alleges that vice presidents and higher executives “participated in behavior ranging from getting oral sex from a subordinate at work to making sexist remarks about female colleagues,” the Oregonian reports. [Oregonian]
Free Parking Downtown
Portland Bureau of Transportation is offering free parking at two city SmartPark garages Fridays and Sundays for the rest of the year, beginning Nov. 24. It’ll be free at Southwest 4th Avenue and Yamhill Street or Southwest 10th Avenue and Yamhill Street. The idea is to encourage more people to come downtown and to help with downtown’s recovery. Local Vegetables for Your Holiday Feast, From Psychedelic Radicchio to Trendy Squash
Holiday cooking is right around the corner, so today we’re talking with farm-to-market expert (and sibling to our executive producer) Molly Notarianni about what’s new in seasonal fruits and veggies. As the former executive director of Oregon's Farmers Market Fund, she’s tapped into all the new hybrids Oregon State University has been working on. She’ll introduce us to new seasonal offerings that you might have overlooked in the produce section — everything from psychedelic radicchio to the hippest, trendiest squash.
There’s this whole insane and amazing world of radicchio that are like beautiful pink flowers or green-and-pink polka dots.
I hope you have a lovely day! I’ll see you tomorrow.
