How Oregon is protecting California condors

November 9, 2023

Hello there! This is Natalia Aldana, an editor at City Cast, filling in for Rachel. Thanks for joining me today — let’s get into the good stuff ⤵️🙃

What's CITY Talking About?

Jeers for Timbers’ Hire

The Timbers Army, the fan club for Portland’s Major League Soccer team, has greeted the hiring of a new soccer coach with jeers. Phil Neville, who most recently coached Miami, gets low marks for his coaching career from the Portland Mercury. Then there are his sexist tweets from 2011, including saying women were too “busy making breakfast/getting kids ready/making the beds” to greet in the morning. Neville has since apologized for the tweets. [Portland Mercury]

Legal Challenge Might Delay Camping Ban Enforcement

The ban on daytime camping in Portland is set to begin next week, but a Multnomah County judge will be hearing a motion today alleging the restrictions violate Oregon’s constitution because it would subject people who are involuntarily unhoused to potential fines and jail times. [Oregonian 🔒]

Independent Monitor Could Oversee PPB

City Council is considering amendments to a 2014 settlement alleging the Portland Police Bureau used excessive force on people with mental illnesses. The Department of Justice has been overseeing the city’s compliance with the settlement’s agreements, but this week’s amendments could include replacing the DOJ with an independent monitor. Should We Spend Billions to Prop Up Oregon’s Data Centers?

Executive producer John Notarianni talks with Oregonian business of technology reporter Mike Rogoway about what goes on in these warehouses full of computers, and the questions they raise about land use, clean energy, and government regulation here in Oregon.

If we think the data centers are doing something that has a big environmental footprint, well, we’re all responsible for that.

In Wednesday’s newsletter, we misidentified where Courtney Vaughn works. She’s the news editor of the Portland Mercury. Sorry about that!
