The other strike that’s still going

November 8, 2023

Hi, Portland! There’s more than one strike under way in Portland — and more than one way Portlanders are showing support for striking workers (more below).

What's CITY Talking About?

Ongoing Kaiser Strike

Medical imaging techs joined pharmacy staff in a strike against Kaiser Permanente last week. A massive multi-state strike against the healthcare giant resolved last month, but 900 workers in Oregon and Washington are continuing their labor action. It does not appear close to resolution: Kaiser called the imaging tech’s demand for a 42% pay raise “frankly, not reasonable.” [KPTV, KATU]

Deals for Striking Teachers

Bars, breweries, and restaurants around town are showing support for Portland Public Schools’ teachers with discounts and freebies as the strike continues. Culmination Brewery is offering penny pints (one per day, to the first 100 teachers). Milk Glass Mrkt is offering free soft serve. [Willamette Week]

Teachers Strike Continues

School is canceled for a fifth day, and as of mid-afternoon yesterday, it was unclear whether negotiations would continue today and tomorrow. There was a shocking logistical problem: the state mediator had other obligations for Wednesday and Thursday. The governor’s office was working on an alternate. The two sides were also meeting with state officials “to get on the same page about the realities of the district’s finances.” Oregonian reports. [OPB, Oregonian]

A First Fentanyl Detox Center

A new drug detox center opened in Portland this fall, and it’s notable for two reasons:  It’s the first in the metro area to focus on fentanyl addiction and the first funded by Measure 110. Is the drug decriminalization law finally starting to pay off? [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Bumper Sticker

Here’s a continuing thread from readers on their favorite oh-so-Portland bumper stickers.

“How do I know I’m not myself?” – Heidi

“‘I’m pro-accordian, and I vote!’ and ‘Where am I going and why am I in this handbasket?’” — Cara

“My all time favorite bumper sticker was seen on a very large motor home traveling north on I-5 many years ago. ‘Give me 40 acres and I'll turn this thing around.’” — Fay Westenhofer

Portland Recommendations

One reader weighed in with their favorite pie recommendation:

“I'm no pizza expert, but [Pizzeria Otto] is some good pizza! They always have interesting and tasty specials but start with the margherita for pure pizza excellence.” — Roxanne

Friends of mine love this place, and I’ve never been. I’m always looking for your suggestions for favorite places around town. What are your favorite pizza joints or other neighborhood spots?

Is Measure 110 Finally Paying Off?

A new drug detox center opened in Portland this fall. Notably, it’s the first in the metro area to focus on fentanyl addiction and the first funded by Measure 110. Portland Monthly news editor Courtney Vaughn discusses the drug decriminalization law that voters approved a few years ago and has been a source of controversy for its slow rollout of funding, on the one hand, and the epidemic of fentanyl that's followed, on the other.

Nurses and doctors have switched their professions to really focus on addiction treatment services because there’s just such a big need for it.

Are you looking for a good breakfast out on the town? Here are some tasty-looking suggestions.

Also, you may have noticed yesterday’s email arrived a couple hours late. My apologies for its tardiness.
