Why Portland rents will rise next year

November 7, 2023

Good morning, Portland! Sorry my scheduling robots clicked "send" late this morning, but here's something awesome: The Ida B. Wells High School football program in Southwest Portland included an unheard-of eight girls on their teams this fall.

What's CITY Talking About?

A City of Introverts

It’s been scientifically proven now: Portlanders rank dead last for extroversion among 53 American cities. At the same time, we have become more open-minded, according to a study of three decades of personality tests. Other psychological research describes our ability to see others’ perspectives: The Portland personality is “quite imaginative” and “built to see the long-term consequences.” [Portland Monthly]

Rents Projected to Rise Next Year

The population is declining, but rents are projected to rise in the middle of next year. That’s because there are just 28 Portland apartment buildings under construction now — half as many as last year. The key reason is that interest rates have risen, making projects too expensive for developers to turn a profit. Housing experts are asking the Legislature to help with financing. [Oregonian 🔒]

Food Pantry for Workers at OHSU Facility

Hillsboro Medical Center, which is part of the OHSU Health system, has opened a food pantry for “all staff who find themselves in need.” Willamette Week reports. The hospital has urged other employees to contribute, but the pantry suggests some workers are poorly paid. [Willamette Week]

Where Is It?

Peak fall in Portland may be the moment the city’s most photographed tree becomes the brightest shades of red and orange. I arrived a little early for that moment, so I snapped a shot of another Japanese maple tree at the Portland Japanese Garden. And many of you were still able to identify the location of the less-than-famous tree:

A shoutout to readers Miriana Clark, Rob Zeszotarski, Heather Pablico Turner, Céline, Molly, Jody Anderson, Nanci Courtney, Ella Bowman, and Josi Yett.

We’re now a little past fall-foliage peak at the Japanese Garden, but still there are plenty of colors to behold.

Now for something totally different:

Check out the trolls under this bridge. Well, really it’s a railroad trestle. Do you know the spot?

It’s looking very sunshiny-yellow out even with the rain. Check out the leaves before they disappear. They’re so beautiful!
