Why do we still fall back an hour? 🕰️

October 30, 2023

Hello to a new week! It’ll be interesting to see if Portland Public Schools and the district can reach an agreement and avoid a strike. If you’re a parent, what are your kids going to do if there’s no school? Do you have a plan?

What's CITY Talking About?

4th Worst in Home Building

Oregon ranks fourth worst for housing production in a new analysis. Washington, D.C.-based think tank Up-For-Growth analyzed states’ underproduction of housing — measuring available housing units versus the number needed to house every person. The situation is growing worse nationally. And no surprise, the West is broadly in trouble: California, Colorado, and Utah rank worse than Oregon, while Washington is ranked fifth. [Willamette Week]

No Learning for Solidarity

Grout Elementary teachers urged families to turn down free loaner laptops for students during next week’s possible strike as a show of solidarity with the teachers union. It’s a problematic request in part because Grout is a high-poverty school, and high-income families are likely to have technology at home, whether or not the district provides it. [Oregonian]

$1B in Excess Homeless Services Revenues

Over the next six years, Metro’s tax for homeless services could bring in $1 billion more than previously projected, according to a new revenue forecast. That’s a lot of extra funding, and it comes because the people who pay the tax — high-income earning households making at least $250,000 a year — are earning more than expected. One possible flaw with the new forecast: the wealthiest Portlanders have been leaving the area, according to recent U.S. Census data show. [OPB]

Can We Finally Stop Doing Daylight Saving Time?

Clocks fall back an hour this Sunday, marking the end of Daylight Saving Time. State lawmakers passed a law years ago making DST permanent, so why are we still doing this? The answer is: It’s complicated. Today, we’re talking with science journalist Erin Ross about what’s going on with this frustrating annual tradition, as well as the history of how DST came to be in the first place.

There’s research that shows that extra hour of light in the evening actually means that there is less crime.

In case you missed it (like I had), you can pay $100 to light the Morrison Bridge in the color of your choice. Do you have a color you love that much?
