How to prepare for a teachers’ strike
October 26, 2023
Good morning, Portland! A literal dumpster fire torched a Burgerville in East Portland. At the same time, one of Portland’s metaphorical dumpster fires appears to extend nationwide (see below).

What's CITY Talking About?
Too Extreme for the Proud Boys
A June fight in Oregon City between the Proud Boys and a white nationalist helped raise the profile of Casey Knuteson, 28. Experts worry it's a harbinger of further radicalization and violence by white nationalists. Already the Proud Boys are dedicated to protesting events like the Pride festival where the fight occurred. But Knuteson, who was kicked out of the Proud Boys for his ardent support of Nazis and later quit the even more extreme Patriot Front, appears to believe in the violent overthrow of government. Polling shows that 23% of Americans hold a related view, believing “true American patriots may have to resort to violence in order to save our country.” [Investigate West via Willamette Week / NPR]
Facebook, Instagram Take In Kids, Without Permission
Facebook and Instagram’s parent company Meta is facing lawsuits from 41 states, including Oregon, for collecting data on children younger than 13 without notifying their parents. The lawsuit comes after revelations that Meta’s own research showed “the harms Instagram can cause teenagers — especially teen girls — when it comes to mental health and body image issues,” the Associated Press reports. Prep for a Teachers Strike
Varsity sports will continue if Portland teachers strike next week. So will counseling. But Outdoor School, most special education services, and most child care will not. Schools do so much for communities; the run-down of what to know before the strike offers one glimpse at that. [OPB]

How to Make Sense of the Sprawling City Council Election
Next year will be the first time that Portland is electing a whopping 12 candidates across four districts, so there will be a lot of people to keep track of. Today, Willamette Week City Hall reporter Sophie Peel helps make sense of it all and highlights a few of the people who will be asking to represent you in your new voting district.
So often we get people on their stumps talking about what their beliefs are that pretty much everyone would agree with and for us, that’s not a very convincing argument.

Are you enjoying the season? I’m admiring the color amidst the gray.
