A high-profile security lapse at PDX

October 25, 2023

Good morning, Portland! There’s some bizarre news out of PDX these days, including a gun that made it through security (see below) and an ex-pilot who may have taken psychedelics before attacking a flight crew. There’s also a question of whether a new direct flight to Tokyo might come our way.

A New Kind of Parking Problem

The Portland Bureau of Transportation is suspending its work with the Northwest Parking Advisory Committee. At the same time, PBOT is facing a $32 million budget shortfall. [Willamette Week]

Why Oregon’s Mental Health System Ranks Among the Worst

A recent nationwide survey ranked Oregon as the second worst state in the country at addressing residents’ mental health. Oregonian reporter Nicole Hayden, who recently published an in-depth examination of the state’s mental health care, explains the reasons for the failings.

He said the only way to ensure he gets the proper mental health treatment is to get arrested and for a charge to stick and then have court-ordered mental health treatment.
