What's CITY Talking About?
$25M a Year for Portland’s New Gov’t
Portland’s new form of government will cost $13 million more for staffing a larger City Council and a new city administrator. That’s higher than previous estimates and does not include the transition costs, such as renovating offices. At the same time, it’s just a fraction of the city’s $7.1 billion budget. Addressing Semiconductor Staffing Shortage
As Oregon works to expand the state’s semiconductor industry, there’s already a staffing shortage. Portland Community College’s new Quick Start program, started a year ago, offers a two-week training that has placed 60% of its students in entry-level manufacturing jobs with Intel, the state’s largest private employer. Snow at Mt. Hood
The season's first snowfall of any note is expected in Government Camp. Up to 5 inches may fall tonight, with as much as 4 inches tomorrow. It may be icy on the roads up in the mountains. [KOIN]
The Struggles and Success of Local Breweries
Brian Koch, owner of the North Portland beer bar Lombard House, shares stories of the successes and struggles of the local brewers who continue to put the city’s craft beer scene on the map. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

What Makes Portland’s Beer Scene So Special
Oregon breweries won 23 medals at this year’s Great American Beer Festival. But in an era of corporate acquisitions and growing popularity of hard seltzer, Portland’s small breweries and beer bars have plenty of challenges. Brian Koch, owner of the Lombard House, a cozy beer bar in North Portland, shares the stories of his favorite local brewers and their iconic pints.
Part of what I think has changed is drinking intentionally — and understanding the stories and people behind the beers.
I hope you’re having a good week!
