The true tale that inspired ‘The Goonies’

October 11, 2023

Good morning, Portland! So there’s an eclipse coming on Saturday 🌘 But before you get excited about seeing the “ring of fire,” it’s likely that most of the state won’t even catch a glimpse, owing to the cloudy weather ☁️

What's CITY Talking About?

Strike Timeline for Portland Teachers

Teachers at Portland Public Schools could strike as soon as Oct. 29. The Portland Association of Teachers will hold a vote next week on whether to walk out, with the ballots accepted until Oct. 19. Then the union has to give the district a 10-day notice. [OPB]

No Longer on Timbers’ Team

After last year’s U.S. Soccer investigation of the Timbers’ and Thorns’ club managers, Alaska started redirecting sponsorship monies to the NWSL Players’ Association. Now Alaska announced it’s ending its high-profile sponsorship of the Portland Timbers after this season. The Timbers say they have a yet-unnamed new sponsor, whose logo will replace Alaska’s on the team uniform. [Oregonian]

State Police to Patrol Downtown

Oregon State police will join the Portland police, mostly by bike, in patrolling downtown. It’s the first time since the 2020 protests that a governor has sent state police to the city. The move is part of Gov. Tina Kotek’s effort to address downtown’s problems. She’s also announced the launch of another state police effort — the Fentanyl Strategic Enforcement and Disruption Initiative — to address drug dealing and distribution. [Portland Mercury]

Getting Rid of Used Clothing

We moved from summer to fall over the weekend (for at least the second time this season). Maybe you’re inspired to do some fall cleaning — I offered some options. Here are some additional reader suggestions:

“NW Children’s Outreach. The nonprofit collects clothes and supplies for impoverished children.” — Beverly Perttu

“Some hand-me-downs aren’t fit to wear anymore, so you might want to give services like Ridwell a mention. That company finds recyclers to repurpose old clothes and shoes that would otherwise languish in a landfill for a long time. I promise I’m not a spokesperson or anything for them, just a power user. (I work at a dog shelter and we end up with regular batches of torn blankets that I put in my Ridwell bin).” — Stacy

Fall Is Awesome

I asked about your favorite part of fall:

“The colors...red, yellow, golden hues.” — Lauren Trank

Is the Real-Life Treasure From ‘The Goonies’ Still on the Oregon Coast?

The upcoming documentary film “The True Quest for Fabled Treasure on the Oregon Coast” tells the story of the Oregon coast shipwreck that inspired the iconic ’80s film “The Goonies.” The film’s director Tony Altamirano answers the key questions: Was there really hidden treasure? Is there actually a curse? Is it really our time down here?

There’s people that have died looking for this treasure.

Look out for windstorms. They aren’t expected to be too severe, but there may be 45 mph winds.
