🍂 Best hikes to see Oregon’s mind-blowing golden pines

October 10, 2023

Hello to a four-day week — assuming you were lucky enough to have yesterday off.

If you’re looking for a COVID-19 booster, Hollywood’s LeCare pharmacy has starting getting doses 🦠 (They’re the Oregon pharmacy that’s given the most COVID vaccines, partly because no appointments are necessary.) Maybe the shortage of shots is ending?

What's CITY Talking About?

New Drug Crimes?

Democratic legislators want to help Portlanders “not have an open-air drug market in their backyard” and appear to be looking to pass at least two key policies: making it easier to prosecute drug dealing and prohibiting public use of drugs. The Legislature meets for a short session early next year. [OPB]

Massive Office Foreclosure

The third-largest office building in Portland, the Montgomery Park office complex, is in foreclosure and will be auctioned off to the highest bidder next year. The Seattle-based company Unico, which co-owns the building, also co-owns Big Pink. The value of downtown office buildings have plummeted after the global pandemic, particularly in Portland. Private Pickleball Court Rentals

A Northwest Portland homeowner is cashing in on the pickleball craze and renting out his private court via the app Swimply. That app is better known as the Airbnb for swimming pools, but now it’s being used for pickleball and tennis courts. [KOIN]

Where Is It?

The last “Where Is It?” scavenger hunt was from reader Angela Goldsmith, who owns The Waypost building on North Williams Avenue. She shared these bits of trivia about the mural:

  • What is the jazz song depicted in the notes? “I’ve Got Rhythm,” by George Gershwin
  • Why is there a spotted cat? It’s in honor of “The Spotted Cat, my favorite little jazz club in New Orleans on Frenchmen Street.”

A shoutout to Michelle Mathews and Miriana Clark, who knew the mural. A special shoutout to the designer of the mural: He wrote in to say he (naturally) recognized the spot — Randall Vemer, thanks for reading!

Insider’s Guide to Mushroom Hunting

It’s prime mushroom hunting season in Oregon. Serious foragers are super-secretive about their best spots, but Rachel Zoller, a mushroom educator and founder of Yellow Eleanor, has plenty of advice for would-be hunters. We’ll see if she spills a few of her secrets.

The amadou mushroom, which is a really hard woody mushroom, gets pounded down into a felty leathery kind of material and people make hats out of them.
