How to have a perfect Portland fall

October 4, 2023

Good morning, Portland! What’s your favorite part of fall? Mine might be staying cozy with wool layers and warm socks. But fall is a good season for going out too! We have some suggestions below.

What's CITY Talking About?

Health-Care Strike Could Be Largest Ever

More than 75,000 health care workers in Oregon and another seven states were poised to begin a strike against Kaiser Permanente. It would be the largest health care strike ever. In Oregon, 400 Kaiser Permanente pharmacy techs and other workers began a strike on Sunday, closing Kaiser pharmacies. Hospitals will stay open regardless of a broader strike. Portland No. 2 Foodie City

In a ranking of cities by the site WalletHub, Portland ranked second of 180 cities, though there’s a caveat: the top city was Orlando, not the usual idea of a top-eating town. Portland was top of the heap for “restaurants per capita, affordability and accessibility of highly rated restaurants, craft breweries, and wineries per capita,” KOIN reports. Those categories sound like Portland’s strengths, for sure. [KOIN]

8 Overdoses at Once

Eight people overdosed Monday morning on North Park Blocks near Northwest Park Avenue and Couch Street. It’s the largest number of overdoses on a single call for Portland firefighters. All the individuals, in their late teens or early 20s, were expected to survive after taking what they believed to be cocaine. Officials say the drugs instead contained fentanyl. [Oregonian 🔒]

Why Fall Is the Best Time to Hike in Oregon

We’re smack dab in the middle of the best season for hiking in Oregon. Forget peak summer. Right now, there are fewer crowds, richer colors, and way fewer mosquitoes. In the final installment of our Fall Getaways Guide, Norther Emily of Wild Solitude Guiding recommends the best hikes to take on a crisp fall day.

Cemeteries are also an amazing place to forage, especially for nuts in the fall. There are always really unique and interesting plants.

Heads-up! Everyone across the country is getting a text to test whether alerts in the event of a real emergency are working. The texts will arrive sometime between 11:20 and 11:50 a.m. today.
