🍎 Find your favorite apple on Oregon’s Fruit Loop

October 3, 2023

Hello, Portland! I love a good tart-but-sweet Gold Rush apple. I get them by the boxload from La Mancha Ranch & Orchard later in the season when they visit the Portland farmers market. Do you have a favorite local apple?

What's CITY Talking About?

Slow Rollout for RSV Vaccine and Treatment

There’s a groundbreaking new preventative treatment for infants, who are most at risk for severe cases of RSV. It could prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed with pediatric cases, as they were last winter. The bad news: for technical and bureaucratic reasons, it’s least likely to reach infants from the most marginal circumstances. RSV vaccines, recommended for people older than 60, are also on the way. Unsheltered Portlanders Sue

A class action lawsuit by unsheltered Portlanders alleges that the city’s new camping restrictions prevent people experiencing homelessness from sleeping, staying warm, and other actions necessary to live. Notably, two Black leaders said the city’s policy will lead “to racism, sexism and other discrimination” and to an increase in the prison population. [Oregonian]

Transportation Trust Issues

The Portland Bureau of Transportation has reversed course on the decision to remove a protected bike lane on West Broadway, but not before stirring up mistrust. Bureau & Budget Advisory Committee member Kara Helgren summed it up this way: under bureau director Millicent Williams’ leadership, PBOT does not seem “really committed to finding safer ways for people to use streets.” Also: “I’m also really concerned about what looks like dishonesty coming out of either PBOT or out of [City Commissioner Mingus] Mapps’ office.” [Portland Mercury]

The Most Haunted Spots in Portland

It’s the season of ghosts, apparitions, and all things haunted. And Doug Kenck-Crispin of the Kick Ass Oregon History podcast talks about supernatural phenomena and ghostly sightings in the Portland area.

Honestly, if you're going to have a ghost encounter, it'd be pretty cool if they were playing Jimi Hendrix tunes.
