Car-free trips to soak up the autumn beauty ⛰️
October 2, 2023
Hello to a new week and a new month! I’ll have some fall getaway suggestions this week, starting today with how to get out for a hike without a car.

What's CITY Talking About?
Portlander Protested at U.S. Senate
Portland youth climate organizer Adah Crandall protested on Thursday in the U.S. Capitol offices of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). “It is terrifying to me as a young person,” she said, “that the GOP is threatening to shut down the government and defund social programs in a time where the climate crisis is literally raging outside of our front door.” Eighteen people she was with were arrested. 6,300 Jobs in Oregon Semiconductor Industry
Oregon’s economists project $40 billion in investments in the semiconductor industry, creating 6,300 new jobs in coming years. That comes after the Legislature approved $240 million in grants and loans to expand existing facilities and build new ones, as well as $255 million in tax credits for research. [Oregonian 🔒]
Overdose Deaths of Young Kids
Very disturbingly, a growing number of very young children have died of fentanyl overdoses in Portland. And it appears the problem isn’t just here. A national study “found that deaths that began to surge in 2018 increased six-fold among children under age 5, compared to deaths among teens 15 to 19, which tripled,” the Oregonian reports. Parents and others are being charged in Oregon with endangering their children’s lives. [Oregonian]
