Where to ditch your hand-me-downs in Portland

September 25, 2023

Fall is starting! And right on cue, the rain arrived 🌧️ Are you ready for the change of seasons?

What's CITY Talking About?

Clinton Street Haven?

The man who owns a block of Southeast Clinton Street personally screens campers choosing to park their RVs near his property. Neighbors complain he’s welcoming unsheltered people to the neighborhood — and crime is indeed above average. But Kenny Housman, nicknamed the sheriff of Clinton Street, says he keeps the neighborhood safer by encouraging gang members with guns to leave. [KATU]

Police Union’s $680K to Hardesty

Former Portland City Commissioner JoAnn Hardesty has settled her lawsuit with the Portland police union, which has agreed to pay her $680,000. The then-union president Brian Hunzeker leaked false information, which resulted in the Oregonian running a story saying Hardesty had been the driver in a hit-and-run. (Hunzeker only lost his city police job after revelations he had a second job, in another state.) [Willamette Week]

Lloyd Center Demolition?

The Lloyd Center’s new owners have revealed their concept for redeveloping the area: The ice rink will stay, but they’ll demolish much of the mall to make way for housing, shops, and other commercial spaces. Surprise! It’s not looking good for a baseball stadium in the area. [Oregonian]

What Will It Take to Solve Gun Violence in Portland?

While Oregon’s tough new gun safety law is on trial in state court, we’re revisiting a conversation with the leader of a local organization that’s fighting gun violence. Even if Measure 114 is deemed constitutional and can take effect, it’s going to take more than gun restrictions to halt the violence. Earlier this summer we spoke with Lionel Irving, who leads the nonprofit Love is Stronger, about why organizations like his will need continual investment.

I hope you have a good start to the week!
