Will more Oregon renters get AC?

September 14, 2023

Good morning, Portland! It’s still officially summer, and today it’s going to feel like it. It may hit 90 degrees!

(There was a delay on our end in getting the newsletter out this morning; apologies.)

What's CITY Talking About?

Oregon Takes a Step Toward Universal Health Insurance

Oregon is the third state to seek federal approval to provide insurance for people whose income is slightly too high to qualify for Medicaid — people earning 138% to 200% of the federal poverty level (or $20,120 to $29,160, for a single person). A state board voted this week to approve the plan. About 100,000 Oregonians would be eligible for the program starting in July 2024, if the feds sign off on it. (About 55,000 of them are currently enrolled in Medicaid and will be kicked off next year because they are no longer eligible.) [OPB]

Portland Mayor Won’t Seek Reelection

Mayor Ted Wheeler has announced he won’t seek a third term. He was the first mayor to win a second term after a string of three one-term mayors, but Wheeler has long been viewed as ill-suited to the role. “Serving as the elected mayor of Portland has been both humbling and the greatest privilege of my life,” Wheeler wrote in a letter to the public. 6-Year-Old on a Bike Ends Up in Sinkhole

A boy on his bike ended up in a sinkhole deep enough that his family struggled to get him out. His family says the 6-year-old was swallowed by an 8-foot-deep hole on the Grant High School campus. [KOIN]

Oregon’s Must-Try Dumpling Spots

One type of food Portland does exceptionally well — but doesn’t get enough love — is the dumpling. Last month, Guy Fieri was seen eating some at a Himalayan restaurant in Sisters, Oregon; no shade to Sisters, but Portland has some pretty amazing spots as well. Eater Portland editor Brooke Jackson-Glidden reviews the best dumplings to try across the city.

A perfect xiao long bao is so hard to do and if people do it right, it’s mind-blowing.

The highly acclaimed Haitian restaurant Kann has won another honor: It’s on Bon Appétit's list of 24 best new restaurants of the year.
