Exploring Portland’s newest high-rise neighborhood

September 13, 2023

Hello. I can hardly believe how fast we are hurtling through September. If there’s one taste I associate most with fall, it’s Concord grapes. I need to get myself to the farmers market. How about you? What do you most associate with Portland in September?

What's CITY Talking About?

New Home for Jantzen Beach Carousel

The Jantzen Beach carousel will stay in Oregon but move out to The Dalles. The carousel has been in storage since the Jantzen Beach mall closed in 2012. The National Neon Sign Museum in The Dalles will work on restoring the carousel and need a couple years to build a pavilion before the public can visit for a ride. [OPB]

COVID-19 Boosters Available Next Week

Updated COVID vaccines will be available starting next week at pharmacies and doctors’ offices. This version of the vaccine focuses on the XBB.1.5 subvariant that is no longer dominant, but drugmakers say it’s effective against the current strains. The FDA approved the updated vaccine on Monday. [Oregonian]

No Cost for Breast Cancer Screenings

A new law will require that Oregon health insurance companies cover the full costs related to screening for breast cancers, starting next year. Oregon will join 19 other states in adopting an approach that outlaws out-of-pocket expenses — not just for a yearly mammogram but also for follow-up testing, including if an abnormality is found. Car-Free Trips Outside of Portland

We’ve had a lot of conversations on the show involving hikes and out-of-town trips in the past. But pretty much all of them have depended on a car for transportation. Today Norther Emily, the founder of Wild Solitude Guiding, and the City Cast Podcast team focus on using car-free modes of transportation for some outdoor adventures outside of the city.

According to the cougar, you smell terrible and you don’t make a good meal. They don’t really want to fight you.

“I used to be cool,” read my favorite Portland bumper sticker of the week on the back of a Toyota Sienna minivan. Alas, I didn’t get a chance to get a photo.

I’ll see you tomorrow!
