Jail-turned-shelter receives emergency funding
September 11, 2023
Good Monday to you, Portland! I’ll admit it: I like to eat away my Monday blues. The excellent spots that stay open on Mondays include Mama Bird, Oma’s Hideaway, Eem, and Tasty Corner.

What's CITY Talking About?
Kroger & Albertsons Plan to Sell 49 Oregon Stores
As part of their proposed merger, Kroger and Albertsons announced plans to sell off at least 49 stores (Fred Meyers, Safeways, and QFCs) in Oregon, as well as another 104 in Washington. Private equity firm C&S Wholesale Grocers is the buyer. That makes sense for the company’s bottom line because according to an Oregonian analysis, 33 Kroger- and Albertsons-owned stores in Oregon are within a mile of one another. (Of those, 20 are in the Portland metro area.) There are no details yet on which specific stores are being sold. [Oregonian]
Bybee Scores Emergency Funding
Multnomah County acquiesced — after a long refusal — to spend $1.5 million keeping the state’s largest shelter open. Bybee Lakes, a former Multnomah County property that was built as a jail but never used, has 175 beds that will stay open at least through the end of the year. The county commission allocated a total of $17.6 million last week in homeless services funding to rent assistance, increasing pay at nonprofits, and expanding Central City Concern’s Clean Start program, along with helping the city’s alternative shelter sites. Portland Has the Country’s 2nd Unionized Strip Club
Strippers at Magic Tavern voted unanimously to unionize, making it the second strip club in the country with a labor union. Votes were counted at National Labor Relations Board offices downtown on Thursday. The next step is negotiating a contract. [Willamette Week]

The Doughnut Throwdown: Who Makes Portland’s Best?
We’re quickly approaching fall weather and the season of pumpkin-spiced everything. But one of our favorite fall treats is the simple apple cider doughnut (really, any flavored doughnut if we’re being honest). Go pour yourself a nice cup of coffee, we’re going to be eating a lot of doughnuts.
I’ll see you tomorrow!
