What's CITY Talking About?

Delegation to Visit Portugal

A delegation of Portland’s elected officials will visit Portugal to learn from that country’s landmark decriminalization of drugs. The trip, sponsored by Measure 110 advocacy group Health Justice Recovery Alliance, includes Multnomah County district attorney Mike Schmidt, county chair Jessica Vega Pederson, the president of the Portland Police Association, and Republican state Rep. Lily Morgan — who, together, represent the gamut of opinion on drug decriminalization. [KATU]

Camas Teachers Return to Work

The school year began with a strike, instead of classes, in Camas, Wash. But the district and teachers have reached a tentative agreement, and schools open today. [KOIN]

Limited Budget Troubles from Downtown’s Declining Property Values

If downtown properties lost even half their value, the city would still lose less than $4 million in tax revenue. That’s a tiny fraction of Portland’s $7.1 billion budget. [Portland Business Journal]

Portland Passes Ordinance Barring Hard Drugs in Public Places

Portland City Council voted to bar the public consumption of hard drugs — a symbolic move at this point, since the city is currently preempted by state law from regulating illegal drugs. Catch up on that and other local news on this week’s news roundup. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Banning Public Drug Use, Dying Trees, and A Long Commute for Students

(Warning: Explicit) Today on City Cast Portland, we’re talking about Portland’s push to ban drugs again, the city’s inability to keep its trees alive, and a big switcheroo for one local school. Joining lead producer John Notarianni on this week’s news roundup are Willamette Week reporter Sophie Peel and City Cast’s director of newsletters, Bryan M. Vance.

I know we're not in bulldog politics anymore, and in many ways, that's a good thing, but in other ways, you just need someone to be like, OK, let's cut the shit.
Sophie Peel, City Hall reporter, Willamette Week

I hope you enjoy the sunny late-summer weekend!
