Portland’s best sunset locations for end of summer

September 5, 2023

Welcome back! While you’re still thinking about this past weekend, did you go on a road trip you'd recommend?

What's CITY Talking About?

Past Electeds, Future Role?

The list of past elected officials who have not yet ruled out a run for City Council next year is an intriguing bit of news. Former mayor Sam Adams, former county commissioner Loretta Smith, and former City Commissioner Steve Novick all declined to rule out a run. [Willamette Week]

Girl Who Drowned Had Fled Afghanistan

The girl who drowned in a Portland pool late last month was an Afghan immigrant whose family fled the country two years ago, seeking safety in the U.S. There’s an online fundraiser for the family’s funeral expenses. [Oregonian]

Cannabis Reclassification

Federal officials are (finally) considering taking action to change the drug classification of cannabis: The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has recommended that the Drug Enforcement Administration reclassify it from a Schedule I drug (alongside heroin and LSD) to a Schedule III drug, which would make medical research easier (as well as be good for cannabis businesses). “It will be a historic step for a nation whose cannabis policies have been out of touch with reality,” says Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.). Oregon’s High Cost of Housing

Oregon ranks fourth worst among states in building new housing. Although researchers say there isn’t a quick fix to address decades of underbuilding, there are efforts underway to help reduce the strain. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Where Is It?

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has served as an inspiration, including for this pavement art. (Stephan Vertal / Hey Portland Reader)

Thanks again to reader Stephan Vertal for last week’s submission. It’s one of those street paintings designed to slow down traffic in a neighborhood. I wonder if it slows more drivers down that the late Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is both a recognizable figure and hero to many in Portland.

Congratulations to reader Cecily Quintana, who knew the location, in the Alameda neighborhood at Northeast 27th Avenue and Bryce.

I love this mural, though I have yet to see it in person. (John Notarianni/City Cast Portland)

Today’s scavenger hunt — a striking mural — is from City Cast Portland lead producer John Notarianni. Hint: he got stuck around this location by a train crossing.

Do you know the spot?
