How you can still escape Portland this Labor Day

August 31, 2023

Hello, rain! It’ll feel even more like fall today. I have some ideas if you want to get away for the end-of-summer weekend.

What's CITY Talking About?

City Maps for Overnight Camping

After Portland’s daytime camping ban, City Hall was slow to release a map of designated areas where camping is prohibited overnight. That map is now available, though the information is not yet widely known. The city is not yet enforcing the daytime or overnight bans. [KGW]

2 Defense Attorneys Sue Over Racism in Washington County

Two women of color are suing Washington County, alleging systematic racism at the courthouse. In separate lawsuits, the public defenders allege the same sheriff’s deputy blocked them from entering a courtroom while allowing white attorneys in. [OPB]

Drowning in a Portland Parks Pool

A child drowned in a city pool in Montavilla on Friday. It’s the first death at a city pool in four decades. [Oregonian]

The Images of Portland’s 2020 Protests

The images captured by photojournalists and documentarians who dodged rubber bullets and clouds of tear gas defined the 2020 social justice protests in Portland. Documentary photographer Rian Dundon and Oregonian senior photojournalist Beth Nakamura discuss their experiences. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Remembering the 2020 Protests Through the Lenses of Two Photojournalists

It’s been three years since chanting protesters clashed with police clad in body armor, taking over Portland streets during the racial justice protests of 2020. Documentary photographer Rian Dundon and Oregonian senior photojournalist Beth Nakamura talk about their experiences. Rian’s new book “Protest City” collects the photos he shot during those chaotic days.

Immediately a riot was declared. It was just instant chaos. And then Molotov cocktails. They were so close to us…we didn’t really know what was going to happen.

I’m all for whatever it takes to inspire drivers to slow down. I’m also all for Portland bumper stickers.
