Hi, Portland! Today I’m thinking about Colegio César Chávez, the country’s first four-year, independent Chicano university. It was founded 50 years ago in Oregon and had a massive impact, despite its rather short tenure.

🏗️ Affordable Housing Developer Pleads His Case
Curtis Rystadt wants to build a 30-story affordable housing tower at 108 W. Burnside Street, but there’s one problem: The city limits buildings to seven stories in Old Town. Rystadt says he wants to help improve Portland’s housing crisis — so much so that he paid the city $7,300 to convene a meeting regarding the proposed build. Will the Steel Bridge House the City’s Newest Skate Park?
Skating is the ultimate DIY sport: All you need is a board or a pair of skates and a creative eye for the urban environment. Now a coalition of skaters and supporters are trying to convince the city to create a new skate park under the west end of the Steel Bridge. Host Claudia Meza talks with Sara Campos of Queer Skate PDX about why Portland needs more inclusive skating spaces.
The more spaces that we build to allow for people to access it during the winter and fall time and just in general, the more that we’ll have better spaces to fulfill the needs of our community.
It has been an honor writing Hey Portland for you. Rachel Monahan will be back in your inbox tomorrow.
