Could Oregon’s largest homeless shelter close?

August 21, 2023

Hi, Portland. Happy Burger Week! I hope you’re planning on trying them all. Let's get into the week.

What's CITY Talking About?

🚧 Roadblock to Decriminalizing Sex Work

Gov. Tina Kotek has vetoed a series of bills aimed at allocating funds for research into the effects of decriminalizing sex work in the state, citing concerns about the potential implications and ethical considerations. The decision comes after heated debates within the state legislature, with proponents arguing for a comprehensive study and opponents expressing worries about the societal impact. [OPB]

🏠 Could Oregon’s Largest Homeless Shelter Close?

Bybee Lakes Hope Center in North Portland has capacity for more than 300 residents. But the nonprofit Helping Hands that operates the facility says it stopped taking admissions a week ago due to financial constraints. The nonprofit’s founder Alan Evans told KGW the shelter could be forced to close in three weeks without additional funds. Meanwhile, Multnomah county is sitting on $65 million allocated to homelessness services and debating on how to spend it — Bybee Lakes has asked for $5 million of that money.  [KGW]

🗺️ New Redistricting Map Will Change the Way Portland Votes

Portland’s district commision has unveiled its final choice for the city’s new voting district map, which aims to enhance representation and battle constituent complaints about gerrymandering. The so-called Alder map splits the city into four districts and would increase the number of city council members from four to 12. A final vote by the city council will take place tonight. From Panang Curry to Pho, Portland’s New Pizza Scene

It’s no secret that Portland has a lot of great pizza, but there’s a new class of pizzerias trying to take a slice of the pie by drawing inspiration from their international roots and creating some unique and wild flavor combinations. Today on City Cast Portland, we’re talking with Oregonian restaurant critic Michael Russell about the new vanguard of pizza parlors that are going way, way beyond red sauce and cheese.

There is a difference between good Detroit-style pizza…and mediocre to not so good Detroit-style pizza, which to me just feels like a humongous gut bomb where you have one slice.
Michael Russell, Oregonian Restaurant Reporter

That’s all for today. And for my fellow cinephiles, Movie Madness University is offering  a four-week course on the work of iconic director Wong Kar-Wai.
