Seriously, this is way too hot

August 15, 2023

Good morning, Portland! Our extreme heat continues. I have some information below on places to keep cool.

What's CITY Talking About?

No Change on Urban Camps

Portland’s ban on unhoused people keeping their tents up during the day went into effect July 1. But the city is not yet enforcing it. The city says they’re working toward enforcement, including by opening the first mass outdoor shelter last month. [KGW]

One Day Strike of Powell’s

On Labor Day, bookstore workers plan to strike Powell’s, the iconic Portland business. The one-day strike will be in advance of their next round of contract negotiations. Workers say they’re seeking better pay —  more than minimum wage for new employees and at least the local living wage for those with more experience. [Willamette Week]

More Bus Service

Some good news for backpackers and anyone without a car: There are going to be more buses in Oregon, thanks to a new partnership between regional carrier Pacific Crest Bus Lines and national conglomerate Megabus. Portland is getting a new daily service to Bend, Sisters, and Salem. And there will be connections for smaller cities. [Portland Monthly]

Where Is It?

Last week’s scavenger hunt was for the best-known fountain in town: the Keller Fountain. Built in 1970, it was originally called the Forecourt Fountain. In 1978, it was renamed for civic leader Ira C. Keller. It’s currently out of commission for several months.

A shout out to the first readers to respond: Deb Gettinger, Alexia Brenholtz, Bettianne Goetz, Patrick B Cummings, Greg Lang, Alexis Warwick, Brian Finlayson, and Michelle Mathews, along with David Sloan and Rachael Riley, who offered memories of visiting the fountain.

“When I was 10 my parents took me there when it opened in 1970 as the Forecourt Fountain. I climbed up the concrete waterfall from bottom to top, with the water crashing down full force. If they’d been paying attention, they never would’ve let me try it, as it was pretty treacherous for a skinny little kid. Lol.” — David Sloan

“That’s the fountain that I totally never put soap in after graduating across the street.” — Rachael Riley

I was on my way somewhere when I ran across this lovely mural. Do you know where it is?

Biking 101: How to Stay Safe in Portland

Even though Portland has recently seen a significant drop in cycling, our city still has the highest number of bike commuters in the country. But with 43 traffic fatalities this year and 70 last year, many cyclists say riding has felt more dangerous than ever. BikePortland editor Jonathan Maus gives us some tips on how both drivers and pedestrians can stay safe on our streets.

Don’t let yourself be defined by your mode of transportation…it doesn’t mean anything about who I am or what I believe. I’m literally just moving around the city, just like you are.
Jonathan Maus, editor of BikePortland

I’m headed out on vacation. You’ll be getting a newsletter from my able colleagues. I’ll see you soon!
