How to build more housing in Oregon
July 27, 2023
Hi there! The Belmont Goats are apparently raising money to buy a McMansion formerly owned by a porn star. On the other hand, there is a GoFundMe for the husband and children of the Belmont librarian killed by a driver. Please don’t tell me if you give to the goats!

What's CITY Talking About?
Failure to Spend $100 Million on Homelessness
Multnomah County has not only failed to spend some $100 million in funding for people experiencing homelessness, but also repeatedly resisted oversight by the regional government Metro on the issue. Most troublingly, service providers are ready to distribute that money to help tenants struggling to keep homes or get into housing. [Willamette Week]
Oregon’s Housing Problem
Oregon’s constitutional limit on property taxes has led to cities charging developers higher fees. One solution to the housing problem is more investment in building affordable housing and waiving the development fees for those projects. [OPB]
Unclear Future for Northeast Nike Store
Ron Herndon, a Black leader who helped Nike open its Northeast Portland store in 1984, blames City Hall for the store’s continued closure. “I'm not depending on the city to come up with a solution. They've had months to do that. I don't know that they understand or care that this was the first Nike Community Store that was established in the country and is so successful and replicated in other communities around the country,” Herndon said. Portland Bars’ Unspoken Rules of Etiquette
There’s plenty of places to grab a drink in our city, and nowhere is as quintessentially Portland as the humble neighborhood bar. But there’s an unspoken code of conduct at these places. Today on City Cast Portland, we’re talking with Tanya Frantzen about Portland bar etiquette. She owns The Basement Pub and the B-Side Tavern, and is the author of “Happy 21st Birthday: A Field Guide for Bar Patrons of All Ages.” She’s also going to teach us how to become your bartender’s favorite customer.
A shout out to reader Aryn Dawson, who was the first to answer yesterday’s trivia question. Francis Pettygrove was the man who won the coin toss to determine that Portland, not Boston, would be our city’s name. Do you have favorite trivia about our city? Email me.
