🍺 The best McMenamins as the brewpub hits middle age

July 25, 2023

Good morning, Portland! “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer”? Both? Neither? We’re apparently a “Barbie” state, overall.

What's CITY Talking About?

“Tiny” Toese to Serve Eight Years

A figurehead in the Proud Boys movement was sentenced last week to eight years in prison. Earlier this year, Tusitala “Tiny” Toese was found guilty of attacking antifascist counter-protesters after a 2021 rally at a former Kmart in East Portland (yes, the same one with a fire last week). [Portland Mercury]

Study of Heat Islands

The three metro-area counties are studying which neighborhoods are more susceptible to heat waves. Some neighborhoods can be up to 18 degrees hotter because they have a lot of pavement and little shade. The study of “heat islands” is expected to be complete by year-end. [KGW]

End of the Great Resignation

Fewer Oregonians are quitting their jobs. In April 50,000 quit; down from 62,000 in December. It could be we’re all liking our jobs more, on average. But with unemployment near record lows, it’s still a job market that’s relatively easy for job seekers and more challenging for companies looking for workers. [Oregonian]

Where Is It?

A lot of our readers knew the statue of Ramona Geraldine Quimby, the protagonist of the Beverly Cleary series, in Grant Park near the Northeast 33rd Street side. She is depicted there with Henry Huggins (another of Cleary’s protagonists) and his dog Ribsy. Are there other fictional characters honored in public art around Portland?

The first 10 readers to respond included at least two librarians, Anita Carroll and Alec B. Chunn, along with David Sloan, Anousheh Nahavandi, Jodi Dorshorst, Brian Finlayson, Madhavi Ner, Melissa Joan Walker, Shelley Tate, Kathy Robinson, and Erin Ludwig, who wrote: “We're moving to the Portland area from Florida and have been listening to the Ramona series as audiobooks on the drive, to the delight of my 7 and 9 year olds, and the toleration of my 16 year old.” (Welcome to Portland, Erin, and fam.)

Today a mural in honor of an effort to reclaim the area for the bees. Where is this display? Email me.
