What's CITY Talking About?
No New Charter Reform This Fall
City Commissioner Dan Ryan won’t support two out of three of Commissioner Rene Gonzalez’s proposals to change the charter reform passed by voters last November. That all but dooms the effort to go before voters this fall. Instead, Ryan will continue to support giving the mayor the power to veto council actions (and delay a ballot measure on that plan till May). It’s not clear yet if he will have support for that. Girlfriend of Suspected Killer Confirms Connection to 2 Women
The girlfriend of the suspected serial killer Jesse Lee Calhoun says he knew at least two of the four alleged victims. She also says he’d had a sexual relationship with at least one of them. [Oregonian 🔒]
Update on Central Eastside’s 90-Day Reset
Portland Police seized 19 firearms, made 89 arrests, and found 23 stolen vehicles in the first 90 days after City Hall devoted resources to a reset on the Central Eastside. There were camp cleanups, as well as graffiti and trash removal, but efforts in the area are still in progress. [KGW]
Why Portland Youth Are Leading the Anti-Highway Expansion Fight
Last month, the Oregon Department of Transportation pumped the brakes on a billion-dollar plan to expand I-5 through Portland’s Rose Quarter. Adah Crandall, 17, of Sunrise Movement, a national youth climate justice organization, explains why that’s big news and why the younger generation sees the issue so differently from most adults.
