🍔 Portland’s best eats at summer pop-ups
July 14, 2023
Good morning, Portland! Washington researchers found that the 2021 heat dome was deadlier than previously understood. We’re not getting that level of record-breaking heat this weekend, but it will still be plenty hot. Keep cool and stay hydrated out there!

What's CITY Talking About?
$32 Million Road Repair Shortfall
The city’s revenue from local and state gas taxes isn’t keeping up with projections as cars become more efficient and more Porlanders opt for electric vehicles. That’s left the Portland Bureau of Transportation with a $32 million hole in their budget, which may require reducing maintenance and repairs (like widening sidewalks and repaving roads), and cutting as many as 100 jobs. Suitcases for Unhoused Portlanders
Nonprofits are trying to help unhoused Portlanders as the city’s daytime camping ban goes into effect. Blanchet House in Old Town handed out 91 suitcases on Wednesday. Some of them were immediately put to use: "This is my house, right now," James Murray tells KGW. [KGW]
Parks Maintenance Woes
Portland Parks & Recreation has funding to build new parks and other facilities, but not to maintain existing ones. The mismanagement can partly be blamed on technical budgeting restrictions. The problem was at the center of a scandal this spring as the city removed dangerous lights from parks with no plan to replace them. The bureau also plans to build a new indoor pool in North Portland, even after it failed to maintain the now-shuttered Columbia Pool. [Willamette Week]
Reducing the Harm of Fentanyl Addiction
Catch up on the county’s decision to backtrack on fentanyl harm reduction. Also on the City Cast Portland podcast’s weekly news round-up: Commissioner Mingus Mapps announces his mayoral run, and a Portland police officer apologizes on video. [City Cast Portland 🎧]
