City Hall’s camping ban starts — without key details
July 7, 2023
Good morning, Portland! It’s still looking hot out, if not as extreme ☀️ Whether it’s free movies and comedy or finding a summer read, we’ve got some weekend options for you 🕶️

What's CITY Talking About?
Sondland Hotel Chain Violations
Former Trump foil Gordon Sondland’s old Portland-based hotel chain Provenance paid a fine for violating election laws. The company reimbursed an executive for campaign donations in 2018. The executive agreed to settle the case, but only after accusing Sondland of having directed the reimbursement. Sondland, who has since sold the company, was not cited and denied any wrongdoing. Gov. Kotek Suffered Key Housing Defeat
Legislation aimed at increasing housing supply would also have increased the state's urban growth boundaries, something developers have long sought. But Gov. Tina Kotek and a Republican coalition failed to pass the bill after environmentalists rallied Democrats against it. [Willamette Week]
No Maps of City Camping Ban
Portland has yet to issue maps or put up signs to indicate where unhoused people are barred from daytime camping under the new ban, which takes effect today. Mayor Ted Wheeler’s office said the city will begin by educating people about the ban, rather than enforcing it right away. [Portland Mercury]

Catch up on the week’s news with the City Cast Portland podcast’s round-up: a century-old downtown building being renovated to help people move out of homelessness, our ever-increasing mosquito population, and how our city is becoming a destination for people fleeing red states. An Actual Housing Solution, a Nasty Mosquito Season, and Portland as a Haven
Today on City Cast Portland, we’re talking about a century-old downtown building being renovated to help people move out of homelessness, our ever-increasing mosquito population, and how our city is becoming a destination for people fleeing red states. Joining host Claudia Meza for this week’s news roundup are KBOO news director Althea Billings and our very own audio producer, Giulia Fiaoni.
There are these things that Portland has to offer to people. You know, folks who live here, maybe we take it for granted that that is the norm.
Today’s trivia question: what’s the smallest park in the world? Email me if you know the answer.
