Portland welcomes trans families 🏳️‍🌈

July 6, 2023

Hello, Portland! It’s getting a little less hot out the rest of the week, but it will still be plenty toasty. How are you keeping cool during this heat wave?

What's CITY Talking About?

Portland a Haven for Trans People

A great migration may be underway as LGBTQ+ families and individuals are fleeing red states for Portland and similarly friendly destinations. According to polling data, as many as 260,000 trans people have moved out of red states, and as many as a million are considering it. “Should this trend persist,” writes Erin Reed, a queer-rights researcher, “we may witness the largest domestic migration crisis since the Dust Bowl.” [Willamette Week]

Architect Allegations Shift Plans

After reports of alleged sexual assault and harassment, Multnomah County will no longer work with star architect David Adjaye on the east county library project. There is another design team in place who were previously collaborating with Adjaye but will continue the work without him. [Oregonian]

Tenant Group’s Financial Struggles

A long-standing nonprofit that advocated renters’ rights is in financial disarray, planning to lay off most of its staff at least temporarily. Community Alliance of Tenants relies mostly on government grants, and the leadership there says they failed to get some anticipated funding. [Portland Mercury]

48 Hours of Nonstop Drag Coming to Downtown Portland

Next week, the iconic Darcelle XV Showplace will be trying to break the Guinness World Record for the longest drag artist stage show. Kevin Cook( or, as he’s better known, Poison Waters) explains what’s involved and why drag performance is everywhere in Portland. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Why Drag Is Everywhere in Portland

At the peak of drag performance being criminalized across the country, the iconic Darcelle XV Showplace is trying to break the Guinness World Record for the longest drag artist stage show next week. Kevin Cook or, as he’s better known, Poison Waters, explains why drag performance is so deeply entrenched in Portland culture.

Drag is everywhere in Portland, and that’s what’s so unique… It’s not just a gay thing in a dark bar. Portland drag is really just for the community.
