Portland Catholic schools ban nonbinary pronouns
June 27, 2023
Good morning, Portland! Isn’t summer wonderful? The sun is shining ☀️The roses are still blooming 💐 And the pools are open 💧

What's CITY Talking About?
Fentanyl Illegal Again
The Oregon legislative session ended this weekend with a flurry of new laws, including one that once again criminalizes the possession of the powerful opioid, fentanyl. It’s the first time lawmakers went back on the controversial Measure 110, which decriminalized possessing small amounts of drugs in Oregon. The new bill makes it a misdemeanor to possess even one gram of fentanyl. And it passed with only one legislator voting against it. [Willamette Week]

✝️ Portland Archdiocese Bans Nonbinary Gender Identity
More Portland parents enrolled their kids in Catholic schools during the pandemic. But Oregon Archbishop Alexander Sample is sticking with reactionary approaches on gender, dictating schools not recognize transgender and nonbinary students’ gender identities. That impacts the use of pronouns, uniforms, and all-gender bathrooms. [Oregonian]
Formal Complaint by Providence Nurses Union
The Oregon Nurses Association is accusing Providence of illegal strike-breaking, calling on the state attorney general to investigate. Providence disputes the charge, which hinges on the definition of a "professional strikebreaker." Under Oregon law, that means working to replace striking workers at least twice in the last five years. [KGW]

Where Is It?

William Jamison, whose art gallery was an early draw in the Pearl District, is the namesake of this square and its focal point — the fountain, on Northwest 10th Avenue, between Johnson and Kearney. He was also a local leader, “an exceptional person in his ability to influence and connect with a wide variety of people,” says Portland Parks and Recreation. “His personal magnetism, in addition to the size and scope of his art gallery, drew many people into the Pearl District.”
The Jamison Square fountain proved a trick question to some who thought last week’s photo looked very much like the better-known Keller Fountain. But many readers recognized and enjoy this spot too. Shout out to those with the right answer: Jen Crowell, Jeff Guenther, Terri Fogarty, Karen Graham, Andrew Myers, Brooke Geer Person, Laurel Jones, and Jesse Neilson, who included the correct approach to making it a full outing: “A favorite spot for the kiddo to splash around after we have dinner at Piazza Italia. Usually ice cream cone in hand from Cool Moon!”

Hike up these stairs for a good workout and spectacular views, especially at sunset.
Where are they? What other Portland staircases are worth the hike?
