🍏 Where to sample cider or cheese this weekend

June 23, 2023

Good morning, Portland! Oregonians have to learn to pump their own gas (or else move to New Jersey, which still has all full-service gas stations) ⛽ It’s the end of an era!

What's CITY Talking About?

Beaverton Schools to Pay for Police

Beaverton School Board approved a plan to keep twelve law enforcement officers in schools — and to pay for a larger percentage of those costs. That’s in sharp contrast to Portland where officers were removed from schools in 2020. The Beaverton district will pay $193,088 next school year (or 10% of the costs of the program). By 2026-27, the district will pay 40%. [Oregonian]

Skateboard Rally for Steel Bridge Skatepark

Skateboarders celebrated Go Skateboarding Day with a rally outside City Hall. Skaters want Portland to build the long-planned Steel Bridge Skatepark. There’s already $250,000 set aside toward it. [KOIN]

Definitely Not a Doctor

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s office is trying new and creative ways to convict drug dealers. They’ve filed charges against one man for practicing medicine without a license after he allegedly sold blue pills that were made to appear like prescription medication. Previously the D.A. has charged people with copyright infringement for counterfeiting blue pills that were made to look like OxyContin. [Willamette Week]

Listen to a review of this week’s news: the raise planned for City Council, the $1 billion for the I-5 Bridge, and A.I. is answering the city’s phones. [City Cast Portland 🎧]

Today on City Cast

City Council Gets a Raise, I-5 Bridge Gets $1B, and A.I. Answering the City’s Phones

Today on City Cast Portland, we’re talking about the last-minute billion-dollar amendment for the I-5 bridge expansion, the city testing artificial intelligence for non-emergency calls, and two major proposals from the committee working on Portland’s charter reform. Joining host Claudia Meza is Portland Mercury reporter Taylor Griggs and our very own lead producer, John Notarianni.

The first thing I thought was how many Oregon legislators who live in the Portland area will now be running for Portland City Council instead because they get paid so much more.
