What's CITY Talking About?
🐶 Donations Outpace Spending at Multnomah County Animal Shelter
The county shelter has received almost $2 million in donations and government funds over the past five years. But despite persistent and deteriorating animal care and staffing conditions during that time, shelter management only spent $627,500 — about 30% of the millions in funds. How does the shelter explain the mismanaged spending? [OPB]
- Related: Multnomah County Animal Services has been criticized for its lack of animal welfare before. We spoke with OPB’s April Ehrlich (who also wrote the above article) on the troubling accusations facing these tax-funded shelters. [City Cast Portland 🎧]
💑 Clackamas County Clerk Finally Offering Same-Sex Marriages
Great news for all you love birds: The county is now officiating weddings. That’s thanks to the recently elected clerk Catherine McMullen who campaigned on bringing the services back. Weddings have not occurred since 2014 when then-clerk Sherry Hall stopped providing the service shortly after same-sex marriage was legalized in Oregon. [OPB]
🚒 End of Historic Run for Sara Boone
Portland’s first Black woman firefighter who also became the city’s first Black fire chief announced she will retire in July. During her four years as chief, Boone oversaw the fire bureau’s expansion and played a pivotal role in launching the bureau’s new Community Health Division in 2021. [Oregonian]

Where Is It?

This segment was written by John Notarianni, lead producer of the City Cast Portland podcast.
It’s hard to miss the Tree Farm. All those plants mounted on the side of the building at SE Third Avenue and Morrison are real, live strawberry trees: 72 of them, to be precise. When Kevin Cavenaugh’s real estate company Guerrilla Development designed the building in 2018, he predicted the result would look “like a big-ass Chia Pet."
A shoutout to the readers who correctly identified the spot: Shannon Madison, Miriana Clark, Anna Nicholas, Marissa Gray, Susan Bladen, Rachael Riley, and Patricia Heard-Hopson.

In honor of tomorrow’s first official day of summer, here’s another urban fountain for you to find. Where Is It?

So much sweat and tears have gone into turning one brutal night in 1969 into an internationally celebrated month-long party. Today we’re talking with Pride Northwest executive director Debra Porta about the events she’s most looking forward to and why this year’s Pride is breaking the mold of our city’s previous celebrations.
We've been afforded this wonderful luxury of it feeling more like a party, which is wonderful. But it came from so much struggle.
Thanks for reading! Sending you lots of good wishes until the next time we meet. Rachel will be back in your inbox tomorrow ✌️💌
