What Republicans won after a record-long walkout
June 16, 2023
Good morning, Portland! Do you have plans for observing Juneteenth? Did you snag a ticket to the Eight Seconds Juneteenth Rodeo? Let me know how it is. It’s sold out, but there are some other options for celebrating below. We’ll be observing the holiday on Monday. The next newsletter will be on Tuesday!

What's CITY Talking About?
Oregon Republican Walkout Ends in a Deal
The longest walkout in state legislative history has ended with a deal that the Democrats compromised on bills on abortion and gun safety. Republicans won those concessions after a six-week walkout. But 10 state senators will be ineligible for reelection after accruing more than 10 unexcused absences. [OPB]
Bad to Worse for 911 Response Times
“Last month, 42% of [911] calls were answered in the first 20 seconds, a decline from around 70% only five years earlier,” Willamette Week reports. That number five years ago wasn’t meeting national standards. A city-commissioned report says that a third of calls to 911 are for things that nontraditional first responders could address. And 17% are for things that a nonemergency 311 answering service could address. [Willamette Week]
Providence Suspending Surgeries, Neonatal ICU Care
Providence hospitals in Portland and Seaside have halted negotiations with their nurses' union as 1,800 nurses prepare to go on strike for five days. Providence Portland is advising people to seek emergency care elsewhere next week and is planning to perform surgeries only for life-or-death situations as well as suspending its neonatal intensive care. Joining host Claudia Meza for this week’s news roundup is Willamette Week’s “Dive” podcast host and "Potlander" column author Brianna Wheeler, and our very own lead producer, John Notarianni.
John DiLorenzo, how dare you be so enigmatic? Is he our problematic Batman?
I hope you have a lovely weekend.
