What's CITY Talking About?
A Peaceful Portland Family Shelter
A Portland family shelter is getting national attention for creating a calm and beautiful environment for families experiencing homelessness. Based on research from hospitals on how to help people heal and experience lower stress, Brandi Tuck, founder of the nonprofit Path Home, designed a shelter that works to help parents and kids get back on their feet, with life-skills and parenting classes as well as housing assistance. Kotek Withdraws Liquor Surcharge Proposal
Gov. Tina Kotek withdrew a request for a 50-cent increase in the surcharge on liquor. She cited the more optimistic budget projections that have come out since her request, though it was not clear if she had the support necessary to win approval for the request. Advocates for addiction treatment were disappointed, pointing out that raising the price is a proven method to lower abuse of alcohol. [Oregon Capital Chronicle]

Tiny Home Flop
Five years after Multnomah County started a program to house unsheltered families in tiny backyard homes, there’s little to show for the work. Why the Heck is Everybody Drinking Natural Wine?
This year, Portland won more James Beard Awards than any other city. All in all, our food scene is killing it. To celebrate, we’re bringing back a conversation we had with Brent Braun, manager and sommelier at James Beard semi-finalist restaurant OK Omens. Brent helped us figure out what the whole deal is with natural wine, and how that seems to be all that anyone wants to drink nowadays. What’s with all the hype?
Natural wine is a throwback to the way things were done. The wine that has been made conventionally since the 1950s … that’s more the blip on the radar.

Summer is short. Don’t forget to treat yourself to some Oregon berries! See you tomorrow.
